The Valiant Installs New Engine: A Challenge Worth Overcoming

Installing a new engine in an old car can be a daunting task, but with patience and perseverance, it can also be a rewarding experience. The perennial delays that occur during this process are often due to the need to constantly 'index' the engine and transmission, ensuring they are properly aligned before attempting to start the vehicle.

Recently, I had the opportunity to re-install my own engine in an '05 Mini S with paddle shifters. After having the six-speed automatic rebuilt at a cost of around $3500, I was eager to hear my new engine run smoothly. However, I encountered some unexpected challenges along the way.

The machine shop assured me that everything was set dot-to-dot as recommended by Clifford, and the only new components were the rebuilt bottom end and camshaft. Despite this, I've been unable to get the engine to start, despite pouring gas and using starting fluid spray.

Two different mechanics have inspected my work and agreed that the engine should start, but it simply refuses to turn over. I've even replaced a set of fouled spark plugs with new ones, to no avail. The distributor has been adjusted left and right in an attempt to find the sweet spot, but so far, nothing seems to be working.

In my case, the issue may lie with the Clifford 4-barrel intake and Holley 390 carburetor. While everything looks right, including spark and wiring, it's possible that there's a subtle problem with the fuel delivery system or ignition timing.

As I wait for someone to come along and identify the root cause of my engine's reluctance to start, I'm left wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues with their own projects.
